May 2005 |
The ‘Royal Family’ cost this
country millions and millions of pounds a year,
not just in hand-outs but also in resources and manpower to meet their
every desire
Over £36m was paid out to
the Queen alone in 2004
The Queen & Prince
Charles have received over £1m in farm subsidies
in the last 2 years
Millions of taxpayers’ money
is spent on trips abroad, days out servants,
the army & police to protect them
Look down in contempt on you
and me
Reluctantly pay minimal
taxes
Shake the odd hand and wave
& look after themselves
This country could save
countless millions a year that could be better
spent on our children’s needs
It’s not democratic, how in
2005 can a family have such privilege,
just by accident of birth?
We are citizens not subjects
They perpetuate outdated
values of elitism
We just don’t need them!
Spend the millions obtained
and saved on more outreach workers &
youth centres for adolescents to give them something safe and
constructive to do, instead of hanging around on street corners
Let the Royals keep just one
large property between them
Abolish the Civil List, let
them go out & find a job
Have an elected Head of
State

Please allow me to introduce
myself, my name is Marc Robertson and I stood as an independent candidate in
the Leyton and Wanstead Constituency in the General Election on May the 5th
2005. My motivation in standing was a desire to raise the profile of the
campaign to abolish the monarchy and to achieve constitutional reform.
I obtained 155, which given
that I decided to stand at the last minute, with minimal resources and against
5 other established political parties, I think is pretty good. It is not just
about numbers of votes, I have been genuinely heartened at how many people
locally fully appear to support the idea of at least removing the royals from
the Civil List, spending the money saved more appropriately and having an
elected Head of State. For one in two hundred of the electorate to vote on this
single issue reinforces that a significant number of people do believe that its
time for change. If you feel the same I would ask you to help make a
difference. I have enclosed a copy of my campaign leaflet.
In 2005 I am astounded that we still have the Queen as our head of State and fork out millions of pounds of hard earned taxpayers money on her and her family that I believe could be better spent elsewhere. In my mind ‘the royals’ have little regard for the ordinary people of this country, and are in fact an embarrassment in terms of their behaviours and attitudes (Charles, Harry, and Prince Phillip to name just three!).
Some people trot out the argument that they bring in significant revenue in tourism, I think that is a myth and no reason to keep them. Personally I would like to see them done away with altogether but at worst, at least downgraded. I advocate abolishing the civil list tomorrow and in fact would like the country to take back a significant amount of the ‘acquired’ land and wealth from the Windsor’s and extended family.
Some may argue that the Queen
has a purely ceremonial role, clearly this is inaccurate, prospective laws have
to be scrutinised by her and have been amended as a consequence of her views.
The PM reports to the Queen on a weekly basis and politicians entering
Parliament have to swear an allegiance to the Queen. The Queen remains this
country’s Head of State.
I am saddened that a Labour
Government in power for 8 years and now in power for an unprecedented 3rd
term, that they have done little to address this issue (aside from minimal
reforms within the House of Lords) and very much hope that this issue may be
addressed in their 3rd term. Clearly it remains inappropriate to me
to have a 2nd chamber with any inherited peers left.
I am basically ‘Mr Average’. I
am not affiliated to a particular political party. I work as Social Worker in
East London. I do believe in social justice and equal opportunities for all
with regards to access to services, housing, education and health and do from
time to time write letters to various politicians and individuals on this
subject. Clearly my values are in marked contrast to what the royal family
represent. I assure you I am not looking for any personal fame or gain, I just
feel that change can and should be achieved.
I accept there are many
significant issues to be addressed both nationally and internationally (including:
the health service; poverty; shortage of affordable housing; education; the
spread of HIV and Aids; the environment; 3rd world poverty and debt;
racism; terrorism; and war to name but a few), however does this mean that we
cannot properly debate in 2005 the role of the modern day monarchy?
I am writing in hope and to
plead that you use your power and influence to help get this issue on the
agenda. Please, if you share similar beliefs to myself, use your position to
approach &/or write to the Prime Minister (10 Downing Street, London, SW1A
2AA), talk to the press about this issue or whatever steps you feel you can
take. This need not take a lot of your time, a letter need not take more than
15 minutes of your time.
As you can imagine I am
writing to a number of individuals on this subject. Please, if you share
similar views, pass this letter/e-mail onto friends and colleagues. Any
suggestions you may have about peaceful but direct action that we can take are
always appreciated.
Many thanks for taking the
time to read this letter, and hopefully for taking the time to help further
move towards creating an inclusive democratic country.
Yours, in determination of
making a difference,
